Born into a coal mining community in the 1950s it was inevitable that at the age of 15 a hole in the ground beckoned. Forever restless, Kelty went on to pursue numerous jobs – bouncer, although he freely admits he didn’t do much ‘bouncing’ rather he would point to those requiring to be ‘bounced’, designer, property developer and sometimes soldier.

Largely self-taught, he attended Central St. Martins London to study oil painting from first principles, Edinburgh College of Art and more recently, Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop. His work has been exhibited in London and Edinburgh.

Painting almost exclusively in oils his work is mainly figurative; using the female figure, his travels, literary and musical sources to inform his work.
